How to calculate the percentage |
We can use absolute numbers or percentages to calculate the percentage of something. For example, we can calculate the percentage of steps that were actually taken by a person on a 10,000-step walk, or the percentage of solutions to the Rubik's cube that were actually done by someone.
Use the percentage (%) symbol to display the percentage of something that is equal to or greater than a given number. This is a useful way of finding percentages when you want to find out how close you are to a certain percentage without actually needing to use a calculator. For example, if we are looking to find out the percent of the population under 50 years old that is over 180 cm tall, we could express the idea as \$X ~= 18% of the population \$Y (that is, 18% of those of us who are over 180 cm tall – \$Y ~= 18
